What is Video-Ident?

Video-Ident is an online identification procedure that complies with the Money Laundering Act (GwG). This involves starting a video chat with an expert who verifies your identity and address using a valid, official identification document.

What is needed for a sucessfull identification?

  1. a computer, smartphone or tablet with a built-in camera/webcam and a microphone
  2. a good, stable internet connection
  3. a valid identification document (identity card or passport)
  4. if your identification document does not contain an address, you will need a proof of address (e.g. registration certificate, utility bill or bank statement). The document must contain your name, address and a date. It must not be older than 6 months.
  5. a mobile phone to receive a confirmation TAN as an SMS.

How does the video identification process work?

  1. Please click on the blue button "Start identification" in the invitation email to start the process.
  2. A web page from IDnow will open in your web-browser and a short check will follow to see if your device meets the technical requirements.
  3. After that, you are in the video identification queue and you will be connected to the next available agent.
  4. The IDnow agent will then guide you through the identification process. You will need to confirm that you wish to identify yourself on behalf of Kerberos in the first step.

How long does identification via VideoIdent take?

The IDnow identification specialists will usually carry out the verification in just a few minutes. If there are longer waiting times in the queue, this is usually due to the fact that they receive a large number of ID requests at the same time.

Experience shows that waiting times are shorter on weekdays between 8:00 and 10:00 or in the evening between 22:00 and 23:30.

How do I avoid typical sources of error?

  • Make sure that your camera image and the room are well lit. The expert must be able to easily read the documents shown on the camera image.
  • Make sure that you are alone in the room. It is not allowed that another person is in the same room during the identification process.
  • The internet connection must be stable during the entire process. If it breaks down even for a short moment, the process will be aborted for security reasons and you will have to restart the identification process.

Which documents can be used for identification?

IDnow supports a variety of identification documents (such as passports or ID cards) according to the common ICAO standard - currently more than 150 identification documents from over 50 countries.

What kind of documents can be used for the proof of address?

The following documents can be used if they contain both your full name and your address:

  • Water bill
  • Electricity bill
  • Heating bill
  • Telephone bill
  • Internet bill
  • Bank statement
  • Official identification document with an address
  • Documents from an authority, public order office, city
  • Registration certificate - in the case of registration certificates, the stamp of the authority and, if applicable, the signature must be visible

Please note: The proof of address must be a printed paper version.

Unfortunately, the proof of address cannot be accepted in the following cases:

  • Proof of address is badly damaged
  • Proof of address is obviously forged/manipulated
  • Proof of address is not written in Latin letters
  • There is no unique address on the document
  • Your full name is not on the document or the name does not match your name
  • The document is not one of the acceptable document types
  • The document does not contain a visible date or is older than 6 months

How secure is the VideoIdent procedure?

Our VideoIdent procedure meets the strict regulatory requirements of the European Union. All communication takes place via encrypted channels. The data centres are located in the European Union to ensure a high, GDPR compliant, level of data protection.

In which languages can the identification be carried out?

The person to be identified receives an invitation by e-mail in German and English. The actual identification, which is carried out by video call, is possible in English, German, Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese. The language of the identification depends on the device language of the user.
